Sorry, but the reason you got the "you don't need one if you eat a balanced diet" is that its true, and most healthy vegetarians don't take vitamins for several reasons-first, MANY of the ingredients in vitamins are derived from animal sources-even in some of the so called "vegetarian" vitamins. Also, many of the capsules are made from gelatine, which is made from the boiled bones, skin, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered animals. If you can't eat a balanced diet, perhaps you could juice some leafy greens, fruits, and veggies into smoothies to get your vitamins. Most supplements pass right through your system without disolving anyway. If you feel you MUST take a multi, I would suggest a good brand (Buried Treasure comes to mind-from a health food store) but take it in liquid form. The reason you got "bad" answers, is many vegetarians resent the implication that the only way we can get proper nutrition is with a vitamin or supplement-most of us take neither. If you don't feel you can get adequate nutrition through food, then perhaps you look at other options, but its quite easily done. I have never taken supplements, and have my blood levels checked every year-they are in the "high" end of normal, or above average-same goes for my 13 year old vegetarian daughter. Its not that we are trying to trash you for taking one, just letting you know they are neither necessary, effective, or in most cases, even vegetarian. The iron in most supplements is animal derived, as are some of the other ingredients. The term "vegetarian" on many supplements is not regulated, but if you contact the company and investigate where the ingredients come from, you will quickly find that there are animal sources in many of them, or even worse-the company doesnt have a clue where the ingredients come from-but many are from China. With China's recent track record, I wouldn't be taking unregulated or unmonitored ingredients.
