First of all, I am not prescribing workouts for any sport specific work such as pole vaulting. The point of the article (which is directed at Thai teenagers) is that aerobic work (here in Thailand, people seem to equate fitness to running long distances) isn't needed to get fit. The workouts I provided as examples are really just easy ways to get your body moving through many planes of motion and keeping track of how one progresses.
If you read again, I didn't prescribe ANY ab workouts. We focus on exercises that use the body in muscle chains, rather than isolating muscles, since that is how the body works in everyday life. We try to emphasize movements rather than specific muscle training. Again, trying to get kids moving and not trying to prepare anyone for Mr. or Ms. Fitness Universe.
You are right about the pole vaulter being only as strong as his weakest link. However, it isn't always the weakest muscle that causes the weak link, but it is often due to poor neurological muscle firing patterns, muscle imbalances (which may be in part due to isolated ab movements) or even poor joint mechanics. For example, strong abs won't get you over a bar if anterior chain doesn't function properly.
Anyways, hope you are doing well and good luck with your training.
In the future, let's keep this basic for the Thai kids who are mostly reading it for the purposes of wanting to learn how to get fit.
Oh, by the way kids…it starts by turning off the Wii!! Go get a workout in!! hehehe
Just because he didn't win Olympia doesn't mean he didn't win big titles.
good job on the ab challenge. no i have been lame about my ab work. I blame it on the heat. I have been wiped after my last few runs this week because of the temps. I have one of those big, bouncy exercise balls and a DVD that goes with it. Maybe I should use it for exercise instead of something to sit on while I watch tv or throwing at the crumbcatchers and monsters.
